Project Hail Mary

With the intent of being as honest as possible, this has been one of my most anticipated movies in years. I've been a fan of the book since reading it in 2022, and had talked about how well it would be as a movie for years. That being said, it didnt disappoint what so ever.

The Good

The score is fantastic, with the visuals being stunning as well. Ryan Gosling does the charecter of Ryland Grace justice, and I am happy to report that this movie is as funny as the book. In addition, the feeling of hopefulness of the film is another example of what movies seem to be trending towards, "Hope-Core". This movie is a 10/10 for me, and I highly recommend it for anyone.

The Bad

I have nothing to say. If I was forced to complain about a single thing it would be that the movie wasnt long enough, but 2.5 hours is long enough and I understand why they cut what they did.

The Story

Ryland Grace, (Ryan Gosling), stars in this movie as a scientest who slowly remembers his role on a cruicial, and one way mission. Waking with the bodies of the other crew and with no memory, we follow Grace's journy, with each flashback showing more and more of his regained memories. Sandara Huller brings a quiet intensity with her role as Eva Stratt. Despite being polar opposites, the two leads have excellent chemestry, both akward in their own way.

Much of the screentime is spent with Grace and Rocky, (Voiced by James Ortiz), an alien who similarly is attempting to find a solution to the problem of Astrophage, a star consuming cell. What this film does so well is raise the stakes, make the audiance tense in their seats, but keep things funny without losing how serious, how critical things truely are. Phil Lord and Chris Miller as the directors did this flawlessly, and it was incredable.

Without spoiling the rest of the film, watch it in IMAX if you can, but it really is incredable in the regular theater as well. Honestly, at the risk of alienating some movie fans, I think Project Hail Mary is better than Christopher Nolans Intersteller.
